I want to connect a monitor to my laptop for karaoke. My lap top has HDMI and USB. The monitor has Display port and USB.

Do I need an HDMI to Display port cable or something else?

DisplayPort adapter cables come in two types: active and passive. Only an Active HDMI to DisplayPort adapter cable will connect all makes and models. https://superuser.com/a/1540812
Since a new active adapter cable costs around £20 or more, upgrading your monitor may be a cost-effective option.
