Aircraft Doors

Can anyone explain when you fly and stewardess closes aircraft doors, they place a diagnonal strip of fabric across the door window?

So anyone from the outside such as a non-thinking gate agent doesn't try to reopen the door. To do so would energize and deploy the emergency slide which get expensive real fast...
