I had a family of blackbirds in my garage one summer. I'd been working on my car for quite some time and never noticed the birds starting to build a nest on the ladders that were hung up. When I told my kids they wanted me to build a small shelf and move the nest onto it, which I did, but it meant leaving my garage door open all summer so that mum and dad could come and go to feed the chicks. At the same time, on the outside wall of the garage, we had a bird box that was occupied by some blue tits. They had seven chicks and it was great to see mum calling them out when they were ready to fledge. They fluttered gently to the ground, one by one, then flew to the side of mum on a nearby branch. The kids loved it. We didn't see the blackbirds take off. We just looked one day, and they were gone. That's nature for you!
