I have been watching the BBC and was astounded to hear that 6 people will receive a diagnosis of MND today, an insidious disease for which, unbelievably, there is neither a cure nor treatment. What Rob, his family and many supporters have achieved is wonderful and the Centre to be built within the year in his name will provide essential help for those who will need it.
I do wonder if the fact that Stephen Hawking lived for 55 years after his diagnosis had somehow made the public complacent about the disease. I remember the first time I heard of MND was the death of David Niven in 1983 and I had to find out more about it.
When families like Rob's and the late Doddie Weir's decide to go very public about the struggle they face I take my hat off to them for it shows a generosity of spirit and desire to help others.
My condolences to his wife, young children and all his family and friends. RIP Rob.
