What's the main difference in what you can do on the above ?

I need to decide whether to buy a laptop or a tablet

you can do the same things but tablets are touch screen no peripherals. Laptops have keyboad and mouse. Tablets also often have sim cards so they are like a big phone.

If you go for an iPad there are excellent keyboards available if you don't like touch screen

I use my desktop keyboard with my tablets, you can buy tablets that have special keyboards that attach with magnets.

You can buy laptops with touchscreens that fold right back so turn into tablets.

The biggest difference is the OS. 

I have software that can only be used in Windows so I need a pc or laptop.

What do you use your laptop for? That is the main consideration
