They drew all 3 of their group games and qualified for the k.o. stages courtesy of being one of the 4 best 3rd placed teams. They then beat Croatia after extra time, 1-0, in a game very few remember - i think many of those watching had trouble keeping their eyes open.
They then drew 1-1 with Poland, thanks to a wicked deflection, then won the tie on penalties. Their next opponents were Wales, playing in their first major tournament since 1958. Goals from Ronaldo and Nsni gave Portugal a 2-0 win and a place in the final.
There they met host nation France, the red-hot favs, who had scored no fewer than 13 goals (conceded just 4) on their way to the final. Unfortunately for Les Bleus, they couldn't score in the final and the match went to extra time. Portugal scored the winner in the 109th minute.
Now, ff to 2024, substitute France for Spain and Portugal for England, and..................................................
