When you start off ... basically your rubbish .. and yes you do have to do different things with your hands (and feet) It will seem hard to begin with - but persevere , you can get in time very quickly. Once you have the basics you can start adding thins to it like Tom toms and cymbals.
If you don't own a set - listen to CD's ,distinguish the sounds then replicate them with the following (for a right hander) Snare Drum (Left Hand) , Bass drum (Right foot) and Hi hat cymbals (Right Hand).

i dont playh the drums, but I am a piano player. the only advise I can give you is dicied that type of music you what to play, because its all different. think of a heavy metal drumer and and blues drumer, and you must be able to keep a rythm and able to keep in time. and at first if it seems hard keep at it and enjoy making a noise!!! lol
Agree with Naz. It has to be there in the first place for you or it will never be easy. I know plenty of drummers who can play when they have dots and crosses and a conductor, but few of them can adlib it when they don't have a score.
I'm married to a drummer. He's never been taught, but is one fantastic sticks man (and that's not just because I'm married to him either - he's jammed with some top bands who've said the same). But he is a natural - he's just always been able to bash the right drums, in the right order, at the right time.
Me? I have a good ear and the ability to know what sounds right or wrong, and I play several instruments. But drums? Forget it!!!

hey i play drums i have a good teacher, i also think that you are naturally good at it because watching the new year sevens (i get taught in a school) play its obvious some are better than others, also you have to realise you can't play it at random there has to be rhythm alot of people don't get that, hope you stick it out if you are learning them though.
