Having seen TV programme about own brand products, where, both Lidl and Aldi came off well in comparisons,I think I would like to try both?

The nearest Lidl is about 13 miles from me and Aldi about 11 miles

Aldi is seeking planning permission for a shop in Rye(3 miles from me!)

Which of the two would you choose and why?

Thank You

Gordon

I don't use either and I certainly wouldn't suggest you travel 11+ miles . Stick with Tesco and avoid big brand names. Tesco own brands are good, as are any of the other major supermarkets. I don't honestly know how Heinz are surviving with the prices they are charging now.

Aldi layout is great too - for your basic everyday items you enter the store & just walk around the outside shelves - fruit/veg/meat/meals/milk/booze/frozen foods/cakes&biscuits/bread.

You only need to venture into the centre aisles if you want to browse or need something you didn't already see.

The Aldi in Rye has only just received planning permission

So I shall have to be patient 👌🧐

I have no problem in my local large Tesco

I use the self scanning system and are always you in-pay-& out in less than 5 minutes,so easy!

Our local Aldi is very dark, cramped and claustrophobic so I prefer Lidl which is bright and spacious

My Aldi is bright and spacious whereas my nearest Lidl is really dark and dingy. This afternoon called in at the Lidl nearest my daughter, a lot newer, brighter, but still a couple of dark aisles. I get west country butter with salt crystals from Aldi. I'd prefer Aldi but dislike all supermarkets equally, but we have no high street so no choice.  You seem to be enjoying life, finding out all these new things, Gordon.

Heinz survive by making many of the supermarkets own brand with different ingredients.

Heinz tomato sauce has a lot more tomatoes and no thickeners but some people prefer the cheaper options.

Buy Branston beans, far far better than Heinz.

There are 2 big name food factories in my wider area.  As well as their brands, they make stuff for Markies, Aldi etc.

Aldi has a better wine selection, but that's about the only difference.

Go for the one that's nearest.

Aldi every time.  Lidl always seems cheap to me - and I don't mean the prices.  Also, the one I sometimes go into has a very strange smell - you could blindfold me and I would know exactly where I was!

Surely a real supermarket snob wouldn't be seen dead in an Aldi or Lidl.

we don't have Aldi in Belfast and I like Lidl for certain products but one thing is I refuse to buy their meat.  No way Hosay.

If Aldi delivered, I would use them more. I do think that the shelf life on Aldi's fruit and veg seems shorter, but we are now into the part of the year when we harvest our own stuff so it's less relevant. I think Aldi's meat is superior to Tesco and better value,  but if possible I buy our meat direct from the farmer or at a local butcher.

I quite like Morrisons too, but every time they have delivered they have cocked it up.

I have never been to Lidl. A firm vote for Aldi from me.

I prefer Aldi but Lidl is a very close second.
I buy chicken and fish which is always good quality.
in terms of own brand stuff, I like their fake Marathon bars (Racers) and their fake Mars Bars (Titans). Their fake Moretti lager (Mapella) and their Snackrite crisps.

The new store development will include retirement homes

lol Gordon, I wish I had one of those nearby, I could book myself into the "near end of shelf life" section.
