I work in a shop and got hussled today. It's the 2nd time in a month that this has happened in the same shop but by different people. Someone came into the shop to buy sweets and then decided to change some money. He keeps changing the money until you're well and truly confused and then makes off with 30 more than he came in for. My manager was hussled out of 30 but luckily I cottoned on to what was going on. However he still got away with 10 and I don't know how. This made me so angry. Especially as I have only been with the company for 2 weeks and I want to do well. Only thismorning I was offered the chance to go on a course to progress to assistant manager. I'm so worried I'm going to have blown my chances. The company don't go to the police over this sort of incident as they say nothing can be done. Is this right?

(not!..) I told him he ain't having it! LOL he got VVV stroppy though and very aggressive, he leaned over the till and tried threatening me but I just told him I couldn't do anything about it.
This sort of incident should be recorded, and a description of the person/people should be noted down and the rest of the staff alerted incase they try it again.
This should in no way affect the course you are starting. As you had only been there 2 weeks, then I'm guessing perhaps you hadn't had much, or any training? Therefore you're not responsible.

Oh, and if it does happen again, either say you can't change the money up, or if he says you owe him whatever amount of money, tell him you're sorry but he'll have to wait until the end of the week when you cash up, to see if you're however much over the weeks takings - just take his information down and tell him you'll be in contact. It's likely you won't be!
This sort of thing used to happen in the Bank I used to work in. The answer is to keep the money they give you for the first transaction on the top of the till, then when they start asking for further change. Say 'hang on, hang on', so you gave me 30 (or whatever), I gave you that in 5 notes, now you want 20 notes (or whatever), lets start again, give me back the money I gave you, I'll give you back yours and we'll start again. Stops them every time! Don't worry yourself too much about it, it happens in loads of shops, it was always happening to my father-in-law in his newsagents. Just don't let yourself be conned a second time.
