\\As farmers protest in Westminster, PM tells GB News: ‘My first job was on the farm. I grew up in the countryside//
I wonder how long before Reeves says something similar
"I worked on a farm a was the head pig semen extractor"
//Jeremy Moody from the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers, an association of 3,000 professionals who value farm estates, said: “For ministers to see an APR claim as the sum total of a farm is to miss the point that APR is only about land and buildings, leaving machinery, livestock, deadstock, other farming assets and diversified activities for BPR … The lack of data given for BPR claims is concerning when we seek an informed debate.”
So even the Guardian is reporting that the 500 a year figure is incorrect as it ignores the value of machinery, livestock etc. which will bost teh estate value and hence the IHT due
“Many of those who voted this year will not be around for the next election. They will be replaced by others, from a demographic that voted Labour.”
You missed the vital last bit:
“They will be replaced by others, from a demographic that voted Labour and who already realise their folly so are unlikely to do so again.”
Many people vote Labour once or twice in their lives. Apart from the diehard supporters, most of them learn their lesson.
“The 500 figure is 500 a year. So in a generation (using 30 years) it may have amounted to 15000. So it's closer but still way short of the 70000 figure.”
Nobody knows how many it will effect, least of all the people in the Treasury. To know that they would have to know how many farm owners are going to die, what the value of each of their farms is and who they intend leaving it to (because the IHT allowance varies – between £1m and £3m - depending on who inherits). They can take a guess, but they don’t know.
If their figure of 500 farms pa is correct and we assume that each, on average, leaves a residue of £1m subject to IHT, it will raise £100 million.
“The environment secretary says this change could raise £200m a year for the NHS”
Let’s be generous and say the environment secretary’s calculation is correct. That sum represents less than a month’s bill for hotel accommodation for those arriving in small boats. So I wonder how much of it he believes will go to the NHS.
