Is there a list, anywhere on the web with ALL the XP updates that I need to install on my new laptop before going on line
MS list way too many - if you search on "XP UPDATES" - It brings up 144,446 pages !!
All that I want is a simple list of updates...........

run that in internet explorer.
The problem is that you will need to go on line to download and install them.

Exactly - that is the problem
I want to download them onto a CD from my main PC and load them on to the laptop from the CD
It's not that simple.
Firstly you can see which updates have been installed on your main PC by going to Windows Update and selecting History.
This lists the updates and tells you what each one is for.
However it would not be practicable for MS to let you just download these to disk as some of the updates are roll-ups and some need the PC to be re-booted after install before the next one can be installed. There is no way for you to tell which is which.
You are in danger of ending up with an unstable system this way.
Quite honestly, I cannot see your reasoning behind this question. As long as you have all necessary security software installed, i.e. Firewall,anti-virus and adware, you are better off going on line and installing the updates in the proper manner
Some will need you to validate your copy of windows on your laptop, and not all updates will be valid for your laptop that are valid for your main PC. If you can connect your PC to the net though, just connect your laptop instead for a bit, while you download the updates.

It looks as if I will have to risk the web without all the updates....
It'll be fine as long as you aren't on for too long. Not much else you can do. Complain to Microsoft for making a platform so crap in the first place.
As long as you have a firewall other than just Microsoft's own effort then nothing life threatening should occur. All the merrier if your PC/laptop is connected via a router.
