When the base of a bed was just angle iron and had criss cross wire attached to it in a diamond shape, the wire just hooked into the holes of the angle iron.

But how times change, then you had a mattress about 3 inches thick just full of feathers, also the pillows full of feathers. Today a feather pillow or mattress would be expensive.

I had a bed like this growing up but I had a flock mattress.  This became rather lumpy so it was turned and shaken frequently.  Can't remember what type of pillow I had.

I remember those bed frames but with a horsehair mattress.  Feather pillows are not outrageously expensive - Dunelm sells a pair for £20 and feather mattresses had to be shaken and turned often, not ideal.

I remember they were very squeaky beds, we had to tighten them every so often.  Also the frame was  very cold on bare legs when getting out of bed in the winter.  I had a thick blanket under the bottom sheet because the mattress was so scratchy.

Some say that the feather pillow was the origin of the expression 'get your head down'. 😄

I recall every now and then one would appear, pointy end first to scratch and generally annoy until pulled through.

Yes, the sharp end of the feather would stab you.

The bed I had as a child (1940s) was made entirely of angle iron.
