'Donald Trump is holding a gun to the head of Volodymyr Zelensky, demanding huge reparations payments and laying claim to half of Ukraine’s oil, gas, and hydrocarbon resources as well as almost all its metals and much of its infrastructure.

The latest version of his “minerals deal”, obtained by The Telegraph, is unprecedented in the history of modern diplomacy and state relations.

“It is an expropriation document,” said Alan Riley, an expert on energy law at the Atlantic Council. “There are no guarantees, no defence clauses, the US puts up nothing.

“The Americans can walk away, the Ukrainians can’t. I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

The text leaves little doubt that Mr Trump’s chief objective is to incorporate Ukraine as a province of America’s oil, gas and resource industries.'

Win-Win.

He'll be basing all of this dross on his previous experiences of lying, cheating, thieving and failed businesses.

At least we no longer have to regard the US as our protective big brother or guardian angel for the interim.

Yes, although I prefer to describe it as a bull in a china shop ...

Why the surprise?

Isn't this old news ?  Biden, for all his faults, still seemed to want to help, or at least felt a duty to do so, whereas Trump just wants to turn everything into gain/profit and sees no benefit from containing a tyrant, whom he approves of, at their existing border.

Yes old news. I just don't want elephants getting a bad name.

Peter Pedant - once again, you seem unable to accept the advice from the Moderators that you need to answer the thread & not litter your posts with references to the Mods or any moderation they perform.  Join in the discussion (try using English & not denigrating your fellow users while you do), stop sniping & you'll find you're posting on AB rather than sitting it out.

No more warnings - play nice or not at all.

Hooray - thank  you miss - seccond threat taken on board

Have I often not said that the mods here are the wisest people that walk the earth - why not just take the compliment and say " yes we are!"

So... you're saying the Telegraph's only just caught up with what everyone has deduced ages ago ?

The Telegraph had seen a leaked White House document which proved it was no longer a deduction, but an official policy - that was the news.

Oddly, for some reason the article seems to have now been pulled.

Who could possibly have predicted such behaviour from Donald Trump?

Well, everyone with a functioning frontal lobe basically.

Trump is amoral. America will extort the maximum it can from Ukraine for the promise of continued support, and likely shaft them anyway once it's extracted all the minerals and whatever else it's after.

We all have rumps. Some have made it their defining feature.

He is a Rogue Elephant. He and Putin are made for each other. We know what Putin wants but Trump is just as dangerous because he is unpredictable and unfortunately powerful. I wonder what delights we will get for the four years of his term?.
