How do I get to Spain?

OK, here is the problem: my girlfriend is mexican living in the United States and I am American. We are trying to live in Spain for about one year, perferably Madrid. We don't know what type of visas that we are going to need nor how to get them. I appreciate any help. -Nick

Why don`t you simply enquire at the Spanish Embassy in America.You will obviously be subject to different criteria than Brits who are fellow-Europeans of the Spanish so we are hardly the best people to ask.
