i was told as a kid that they have elastic bands inside them was or is this true?

There are a few types of golf ball on the market now......a 2 piece ball is simply a solid core which makes up the vast volume of the ball which is then completed with a thin outer skin.

A 3 piece ball however has a small ball about half the diameter of the finished object which then has tightly wound elastic spun round it and is also finished off with a thin outer shell (though this is usually of a softer nature than the 2 piece ball).
