can you tell me if its worth getting a psp as i haven't really bin able to find any advice on it. can u tell me the good and bad parts

I own a PSP and I am about to sell it.
In theory the PSP is a wonderful machine. Its looks are to die for and it should be the best portable gaming machine that ever existed. But Sony have missed every opportunity to make this happen.
You will hear some people sings its praises, this I can only imagine is because they look only at the specs of a machine and not at what the overall picture is.
Because whilst the specs of the machine are amazing, (it has similar specs to that of the PS2, yet its handhald !!) in reality, the machine has been done an injustice by its makers and it is not going to change. So in short, do not buy this machine. Below is the explanation.
Gaming: Only a few good games exist amongst a very bad bunch. Even Fifa 06 on PSP was a let down. Just one season was playable, compared to the PS2's multiple season playability, why? and the wifi 2 player mode had so much lag there is no point in playing. So many other games have examples like this, but another aspect you have to consider is this: When a game you like comes out, do you buy it on the original console (PS2) or on PSP ? Or do you end up forking out twice the money for the same game twice?
MP3 player: Awful set up, and you may as well spend �30 on a small MP3 player from ASDA than bother with this
Pictures: Its just pictures ! Use your mobile phone instead

UMD: Universal Media Disks, the format from Sony to play movies on. Want to watch a film? Buy one for �20 and then watch it on a small screen. Although now you can buy them from as little as �4 because all movie companies are dropping the format because it is so pointless. Most movies companies no longer license the UMD range, for all purposes, the format is as dead as the mini-disc, if not more so. The quality of the films was good, but again, do you spend twice the money, �20 on the original to watch at home and �20 on the PSP version..and at the same killer price of �20 you dont get any 'extras' so whats the point in that?
Your own movies: Thats right play you rown MPEG4 movies you download or make onto the PSP !! Easy !! No it aint, spend half hour to 2 hours changing most WMA format movies..like music videos, into MPEG4 then spend an hour learning how to put it into the PSP root folder for movies, then give it a specific name before the machine accepts it..not user firendly at all.
In short, its great to look at and could have been the best thing around on the market for serious gamers..but its a white elephant...so much money for so little reward.
At such a cheap price and for original gaming go for the DS..yes its more aimed at kids but its got variety and originality..wish I had kept mine

I played a friend's PSP that he brought back from Japan and loved it, so much so that I got another friend to post me one from Hong Kong.
However, the novelty soon wore off, I got very bored very quickly as the games are pretty poor. In essence they are just cut down versions of the PS2 ones with no added 'portable' extras that make them as good or better.
The PSP was an interesting premise but there's no point in it when you can get a PS2 for cheaper.
I never found the ability to play music or watch videos any use either!
The Nintendo DS does what the PSP should have done (originality, fun and unique games for on-the-move) for a cheaper price. At the end of the day it's down to personal opinion but I never thought I'd here myself say 'If you want a portable console forget the PSP and get the DS Lite'!

Pretty bad really, yeah they surfice for the most part...but you try playing FIFA on the PSP...awful.
If your used to moving the players via the directional buttons you will be dissapointed..you can only control the players via the thumb stick and its even less resposnsive than the PS2 thumb stick, I really could not succeed at the game for this reason. Very disappointing.

I'd like to add that the battery life sucked.
I bought mine with Wipeout Pure and was forever having to charge up the damn thing. I use my DS almost everyday and the last time I charged it was a fortnight ago.
I bought it from Argos and the screen had a dead pixel right in the centre. So I took it back only to be told that Sony don't consider 1 dead pixel enough of a reason to exchange so basically told me to get stuffed.
Fortunately Argos have heard of customer relations and swapped it for me.

Im gonna be an odd one out here, but i have one and i really like it. I suppose it depends what you are wanting it for and what you are wanting it to do.
I have a few games, and i really think they are good but im not really a big gamer myself and not too into the whole console type thing so maybe im just into the looks of it all but for what i want it for and everything it serves its purpose and i dont find anything wrong with it.

I agree with missjeff. I have ripped alot of my dvds to MPEG4 and copied them onto the PSP, meaning I dont need to by the little UMD discs. I can assureyou that it doesnt take 2 hrs to do it and is extremly easy if you use PSPVideo9 to convert and copy the film onto psp. Plus PSPVideo9 is free to download.
You can also use "homebrew" software on it. So downmload SNES or Megadrive emulators and play all you old classics

Yeah..dont upgrade the firmware if you dont want to play any new games on it...not the best advice in the world that bit..but well meant I am sure.
The fact that someone has sugested you download some programmes to convert movies into MPEG4 not forgetting you have to put it in that stupid folder with a unique name...whilst saying its easy and does not take long..is basically shooting themselves in the foot.
You shouldnt have to go through all that rubbish to be able to do this....its not user friendly at all. Especially for people who dont know a lot about electronics/computers/gadgets..does Mrs Middle age woman want to go through all that when buying it for her kids? I think not..does that explain enough how awful this machine is in terms of practicality?
