Does it have to be cod liver oil???

I use soya oil which is much cheaper and just as good - many people even use vegetable oil!!! - I have asked our vet and he reckons that there is little difference only price

Hi Nickynoodles,
It's for my mothers welsh cob pony so I don't know if the soya oil would have desired effect on the poor old b*gger (he's 20)
So any feedback on soya oil or or vegetable oil (really!) would be appreciated as would where to buy
Take a look at this:

I always use it on my old 18 yr old Gelderlander and he is fine!!!
I meant to add mine is made by dodson & horrell and costs half the price of cod liver oil. What is the problem with the old boy? are you worried about his joints. I also have a 24 yr old New forest mare (who is on loan) and she is on glucosamine for her stiffness.

Mother is just trying to keep the old fella in fine fettle - nothing wrong at the moment (fingers crossed) except for his weight!
Question Author
she is also just a little worried about joints etc - hence the cod liver oil. She figures if it's good enough for her it's good enough for him
Is he being fed hard feed?? is so, what??

If not, then just some straight forward chaff and then a bit of the oil and maybe garlic
Question Author
If she switched to soya would she be able to cut out his oats (now that doesn't read well) has he is still an entire and the oats make him rather ahem frisky
Question Author
she buys hay from local farmer and is fed fruit, bread (which he loves but to be honest i'm not sure of feeding regime I'm only the gofa as she is technophobe
I would switch to another hard feed!!! there are many for older horses such as: 16 plus by dodson and horrell but if he is in good nick then I would give him some sort of course feed like pasture mix.

I would not feed mine oats!!!! - I would be dead by next week
Question Author
will pass on your answers - many thanks for help.
please keep eye on this thread - as I'm sure I will be posting on it soon and would appreciate your feedback
Not a problem!! - feeding your horse is a very individual thing and most people have their own opinions.

I live on our farm and my horses are stabled in a barn so I don't have livery yard luvvies telling me what to do - Hope your mum does not mind me nosing!!!
My old boy lived to 34 and he was fed (during the winter) on a diet of soaked sugar beet pulp, bran, flaked maize, a scoop of 16+ and a few 'steady neddy' cubes. As for oats - no way - would have had a rodeo horse if he'd had them! He was a heavyweight cob and the only other thing I added occasionally in very cold weather was some barley to keep him warm from the inside (had a habit of shredding rugs, usually getting hooked to a fence by them!).

Also did add a tablesponful of cod liver oil in the latter years
and he never had any mobility problems, but I always used Super Solvitax. I found the agricultural merchants were cheaper than the horse feed specialists.
