57 Answers
I am pregnnt (by artifical insemination) just so you know I am a lesbain and do NOT fancy men. I am worried about the pain it will cause. Can you tell me honestly how much does it hurt? and how long the pain lasts for? It is worse then breaking your arm? Is it just when the baby comes out that it hurts or the whole labour?

During one of my labours Mr Pippa remarked that he had gnashed his teeth so hard his mouth hurt.
You can imagine my reply to that (quite unsavoury).
Yes childbirth hurts..even the most straightforward & easy births hurt somewhat ~ I have experienced very tough labours and very easy ones..the easy ones hurt less, but they still took my breath away.
In my experience the contractions hurt a LOT more than actually delivering the baby and it's the contraction stage which generally lasts the longest. It is akin to having your insides wrung out every 5 minutes. Pushing the baby out is a different kind of pain & as it was 'productive' much easier to cope with.
I seem to recall Russian telling us that she was going to be knocked out and have a C section....

I didn't comment with 'casual authority' - I passed on my wife's experiences - Daughter One - five hours' labour start to finish, popped out, job done. Daughter Two - over twenty hours' labour, breech birth, stitches. Daughter Three - nine hours labour, accelerated, serious pain.
I was trying not to scare the Questioner, who may or may not be genuine, but I did begin by saying I am obviously not qualified.
Then again, I've never murdered anyone, but I have an opinion on Agatha Christie novels! As my good friend Noxlomos has said, lack of direct experience is no bar to having thoughts, opinions and advice, and expressing them. Making out I know all about it is obviously facile, but i tried hard to advise that obviously I don't. Forgiven?

Seriously now..every midwife I have spoken to (and having 4 children means I have spoken to quite a few!) has said that the quickest labours are the most painful.
I can't comment on long labours as my longest was 6 hours, the shortest 3 hours but I can say it was unbelievable pain. Someone I know had a 21 hours labour and spoke about having breaks in the pain ~ I didn't ever have that..it was constant. The shorter labours are the more intense & fierce the pain is, generally. This is said to be because the body is working overtime on something that should take twice as long!
Andy, I do see your point and even though in the past I have often joked about me never knowing what real pain is I recall Mr Pippa telling me that he could see from my facial expression that childbirth must be the most painful thing ever...and to see me pushing out a big head made him wince!
