why has only a small part of the town been excavated. is it due to access to the land or is it something else like preservation being important by not exposing the remains. am intrigued as to why such a vast site has only been partly exposed?

I am no expert, just a Time Team fan, but a google search turned this up, which may explain.

As the site is so large, I would imagine that the cost of a 'dig' would be huge, so they are exploring other archeologial techniques that require less labour intensivity.
