Dennis Nilsen

Does anyone know if Dennis Nilsen is still alive? I read that he was sentanced in 1983, to live imprisonment, with a recommended 25 years minimum sentence.....by my reckoning that means he could be parolled in 2008 - does anyone think he may be released back into society and will they have to give him a new identity etc?

I read 'Killing For Company', and as backed up with the first link, it seems that Nilsen was able to carry on murdering because of a bizarre series of events which prevented his capture early on. Indeed - were it not for his 'backlog' of bodies, hw could have gone on for much longer.

The tragedy of these men's deaths is that some of them remain unidentified and unmourned.

It may not be possible to release Nielsen, I do not believe he has co-operated with any attempts to rehabilitate him, and he may well be viewed as a continuing risk in view of this.

Along from my original posting, it means that Rosemary West could be free in 2019, this story being more recent must send fear through our hearts ?

There is also outrage down here in Brighton as a local bloke.....Russell Bishop is close to parole.

He was on trial about the "babes in the wood" murders back in 1987 but was let off due to evidence being lost by the police.

He was later given life for a sexual assault on a young girl which he left for dead. If he gets out...the locals will kill him.

I do believe Jeremy Bamber will also be close to parole too....he was the one who shot all his family for his inheritance at their farm house back around 1985.

Hi Hammerman, there was a programme a few months back on the babes in the wood case, I find it incredible that they are actually comtemplating releasing these people back into society. With all of these criminals they are going to have to provide them new identies, because as you rightly said, they will be killed by the general public.

People like Dennis Nilsen (including other murderers like Beverly Allitt and Peter Sutcliffe) are assessed every year by a Home Office appointed Consultant Psychiatrist. As they are not sentenced to a fixed term and, if judged insane, were sentenced to be held at Her Majesty's Pleasure, they would have to be judged sane and safe to be considered by the parole board for release (though if judged insane at the trial - they were found not guilty by reason of insanity so were not sentenced and therefore parole doesn't come into it!). The parole date in murder cases is a theoretical figure before which the sentenced party cannot be considered for parole - after that date they may be considered but ....
I think we can safely say there is no chance of Dennis Nilsen being released.

Thanks Trottie for that, I would have been surprised if they ever did decide to release such people, however the way the UK is going, nothing would surprise me in this day and age!
