how can i stop my upstairs chipboard floor from creaking when you walk on it?

I had the same problem. Normally the chipboard is nailed to the joists. Lift your carpet, find the creaky area and screw it to the joists. (nailing it down again will only work for a short time). This should do the trick(until another area starts to creak).
I've also been told that sprinkling talcum powder between the gaps in floorboards stops them creaking. Anyone ever tried this?
