Yes she does come across as an upper class winger I'm afraid . I do feel sorry for anyone whose home has been damaged but she's obviously not short of a couple of bob if she can nip orf to Claridges away from it all. I have had to live with damage to my property since August after torrential rain and flooding in my area . I am sorry about her clementines but I have to dodge falling lumps of plaster with dinnerplates in my hands every night and pray it doesn't rain !!.Luckily mine was only the roof but some poor devils had excrement floating in their living rooms .
Of course living in the back of beyond we didn't make the headlines and some people round here are still unable to go back to their homes.
I vote we all ask to be put up at Claridges next time something like that happens !

About 16 years ago we got snowed in at the in-laws in the Cotswolds, on the local news there was a woman, with a whole punnet of plums in her mouth, complaining that her electricity was not working so she couldn't cook her pheasant! Maybe she's related to your woman!

i don't deny she has had a horrible experience and seeing your home damaged is undoubtedly horrible, but its the hysterical atttitude, the flowery prose about her ruined decor, and the bizarre belief that everyone else is devastated for 'her loss' and that her children feel a bit unhappy.

she needs therapy alright - but not for this!

everybody seems really cross that her insurers should think of Claridge's. And that she's upset rather than having a decent stiff upper lip. And that she's selfish (though as far as I can see she cares a lot about her fellow sufferers). And that she notices and reports details, though that's what good journalists do, and gets to grips with her own emotions, which is what good novelists do. Shaney can comment, as she's had domestic disasters too. But I'll take with a pinch of salt the sneers from people whose houses haven't been ripped up by the weather recently.

It's pos. that that life and the world can deal you out enough crap to turn you slightly towards the attitude of "Sod it , I can afford it so I'm going to have it , the beggar sat at the side of the cash point can just stay there!"

I think I'd be more inclined to feel a little sorry for this woman if it wasn't for all the name dropping and the bit about the place being shot for a magazine. As if anything like that matters when lives are on the line.

Reminds me of the tale I heard from the hurricane Katrina tragedy. There was this old boy got picked up in a boat. Like so many, he'd lost everything - just another survivor. It wasn't until they'd got him safe in the hospital that anyone found out he was a really famous jazz/blues musician.

I was expecting it to be quite hilarious, but I've read it and have to agree with jno. She does use flowery language, and obviously loves writing dramatically, but I'm sympathetic! The woman has had a proper shock, one where she thought she might die, and has then had to pick up the pieces of having your house and possessions half demolished right before Christmas. Let's tell all those people who lost money in the Farepack incident to stop whinging - they've at least got walls and a roof. No? Or is this really just people revelling in the fact that someone a bit better off than them has suffered badly?

no-one is laughing at her misfortune either - of course she is upset and frightened - she is bound to be

what has happened to her is undoubtedly horrible, but it is the things she focuses on, her priorities - oranges, bowls, xmas cards, shelves etc, and how little she knows of true suffering, yet writes like she has suffered the most out of everyone, over petty things - where is the true "tornado hell"?

lets see if the people who lost family members, friends, neighbours, entire houses, limbs, their livelihoods, pets, all their possesions etc etc , and who can't afford to have it fixed or to stay in a luxury hotel in the meantime, give a toss about her bowl of fruit being knocked over, or that a lady couldn't afford to paint her door!

of course no-one wants their possessions to get damaged - whatever type of wood they are made from - but people died or lost everything, and for her to witter on as though this is the true horror of the situation is unbelievable.

no-one said it was supposed to be hilarious - that was your word.

i said it showed genuine self absorbedness and the attitude of a truly spoilt person, whose idea of a true suffering and horror would be a welcome blessing to many others in the world.

I would say she's just trying to paint a picture of devestation, rather than being actually horrified at the thought of clemantines on the floor. And what's wrong with thinking of herself and her family at this time? I'm thinking that I'd be very self absorbed at a time like that. Yes, there are people worse off, but you can't use that against her. This is probably as bad a thing as has ever happened to her, and she has as much right to distress as anyone else. Treating suffering purely objectively is a dangerous game, and leads to a lack of empathy for people around you. There are things that I can cope with that others can't, and I'm sympathetic with them. There are things that I can't cope with that other's can, but I don't expect them to lack any empathy for my situation.
She'll get over the mess and destruction of course, but she has my sympathy while she does.
