I want to just do a snow effect icing on the top of a Christmas cake, is it just a stiff icing mix or do I have to add glycerine and if so what are the quantities. Thank you.

I just use Royal Icing. 1lb icing sugar, start with 1 egg white (you can always add more) juice of 1 lemon. Please make sure your white is from a lion marked egg(there is still salmonella about). Beat till stiff, pull up with a knife on top of cake to give snow effect. Merry Xmas.
There's also special sugar with extra large grains so it's extra sparkly -- you could put that on top of the icing to add texture. In the US it's called decorator sugar.
