ok i'm a complete novice when it comes to guitars, what i want to know is do you need to use a pick for a acoustic guitar. thanks.

Generally, if it's got steel strings, then a pick makes it easier and certainly more comfortable, but there's nothing to stop you playing with your fingers. It's wise to learn both, eventually.

Nylon are usually played with the fingers.
