Jumping dog!!

We have adopted recsue dog and he is a gem APART from going berserk when his lead and harness are produced for walk.He is also very inclined to pull on the lead. Q is we have used the water spray as deterrent(successfully)for bad behavior would that work when he starts?
Also pulls lot when out wht are opinions on hlti esy leader he is collie cavalier mix and very sharpHELP?????

It's so lovely to hear you've rescued a pooch.
Our dog also gets very exited when the lead is taken off the hanger. I MAKE him SIT. he does and that is when his lead goes on. I then make him sit and stay as the door is opened and he only is allowed out of the door when I say come. Lots of good boys then. He is on a halti lead and I talk to him alot, saying nicely in soft tones and he's good and walks nicely. It takes patience and a lot of it lol....
You find a word you're comfortable with and away you go.
I also have a handful of kibble in my pockets as a treat for sitting at the road and coming back when called.
They are stomachs on legs after all!!!!!!

The best way to stop him jumping about is to just ignore him.
Shaney used to do this jumping around like a mad thing at the first sign of the lead.Just put the lead back ..turn your back on him and go and do something else until he calms down.Then try again ..you will have to persist though and then when he does get the message praise him and give him a treat.
If he still looks as if he going to spring around give him a sharp command to sit .If he doesn't ..walk away again.He'll soon cotton on when he knows that jumping about won't get him that walkie he is so deperate for.
As for the pulling ...if he pulls do the same ..stop..say ..No ..very firmly and go the other way...if he pulls stop again and go the other way.He will soon realise . Always give firm commands and praise and reward good behaviour.
If he has collie in him he will soon get the message as they love to please and perform.and are very intelligent.

As for pulling, only walk forward when the lead is slack. He's very sharp, so should get the idea quite quickly. Start before you leave the house - if he pulls, you stand still or turn around and retreat a pace or two. The only way for him to get where he wants to be - forward! - is to control his energy and walk at your pace until you let him off for a run.
This does work, but everyone must be consistent - it may take you 20 mins to get out ouf the house on the first day. He will be then working on the reward system, if he behaves, he gets what he wants, which is usually more effective than punishing the wrong behaviour, eg water spray.

A Halti will stop a dog pulling, as you guide the head and the body follows. However it will not teach the dog not to pull - it will only work while it is on.
Having said that, a harness will in most cases not stop a dog pulling - think about it - you put a harness on a husky so it CAN pull a sled and also on a horse so it can pull a cart. A harness spreads the load and makes it easier to pull, as by the time the harness kicks in, the dog has already pulled with its front legs!
Get a combi collar (sometimes called a half check collar ) which is nylon with a small section of chain in the shape of a triangle (make sure it forms a triangle or it won't work).
This will give you a bit of leverage when he pulls and you can bring him back to your side. You need to do this again and again, telling him 'heel' or 'close' or whatever word you want to use. Plenty of praise when he is in the right place.
Try enrolling at a dog training club, they will show you how to stop him pulling and he will enjoy it (so will you). It is also good for socialising.
