BT Broadband

I've just had my BT broadband "upgraded" to their "Up to 8mb" option. They said I should expect 6.5mb but all the online speed tests I've done have shown a download speed of between 1.5-2.5mb. Upload speed is 128k!!!
I'm not very impressed, has anyone else had this??

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.It all depends on how far you are from the exchange.Lots of people are unimpressed by the speeds they get after upgrade.A lot also depends on the condition of the actual wiring and the number of breaks you may have in your links through various adapters and splitters etc; No two people are going to be exactly the same. You should be getting better bandwidth than what you have at present though .Keep on at them. They are telling people that the speed will improve after the new connection has optimized..I've been waiting a month and still no improvement.Check this excellent site for an eye opener !! By the way ..it will also tell you where your exchange is too....http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php ?ecode=SLMOS
When i first upgraded to an 'up to' connection i tested my line via adsl guide and was also really disappointed to see the results but for whatever reason I dont think they are true.
Do you connect via a router ? If so,open your router in internet explorer 192.168.0.1 and check connection status. In there it will give you an accurate measurement of upload and download speeds.

I was instructed to power down and restart my ADSL modem every day for the first week. This was something to do with the optimisation of the line speed.
I was quoted 6mb, and eventually got slightly more than that.
BTW, you say 'download speed'; is this the speed you can actually download a file at? This isn't the same as the ADSL's maximum line speed, principally due to contention and delays on the rest of the internet and other servers.
