I'm looking at doing an overland trip from London to Nairobi. On checking out numerous tour operators I have worked out that for a 31-33 week trip (including VISAs, spending money and doing every optional extra available) that I will need just under 10,000. Does this sound right???

Thank you but I was actually hoping to hear from someone who has already done such a trip.

Yeah it is a little nerve racking but hopefully all will be okay. Last years route was through Nigeria, Chad, Sudan and Ethopia but that has since been cancelled due to, exactly as you say, it being too dangerous. I'm planning on travelling straight down the west side of Africa (bar Senegal, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast) to cape town and then up through Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, then going through Uganda before flying out of Nairobi (if all goes well!!). Will be gone for about 9 months so really want to get some kind of idea of how much money I can expect to go through. Cheers for the website by the way. Will definitely keep my eye on it!
