my job is rubbish

I drive a small wagon around the lake district all day delivering beer, The work is hard physically, the hours are long and the pay is rubbish. I am 33, have a handful of GCSE's and want to do something else with my life.(a bit more money would help!) I look in the jobs section of local papers but I am not qualified to do much and most of the general vacancies are for very low paid rubbish jobs like mine! I have thought about college but dont know what is worthwhile training for at my age, what I would be capable of, and how I would pay my household bills. It would be nice to end up doing something I enjoy but I haven't a clue what that is! Any ideas/offers appreciated

think about things you have enjoyed in the past that were not then work related, hobbies for instance. You could also make a list of your qualities and then see if they point to a particular kind of job or career. Is there anything you always wanted to try but did not get round to doing?

You are only young so don't despair. I know it sounds mad but have you thought of applying for jobs at your local Council ? They do take people at the 'bottom' for admin jobs and if you are honest at the interview and say you want to make a career etc. and are wasting your GCSE's you might eventually get a job there, although my advice would be to apply for everything. It is hard at first but once you are in you can apply to other departments internally and there are some very interesting things, planning, trees, licensing etc. I have always found it good fun and you get not terribly well paid to start but you get an increase every year, job security and make lots of lifelong friends. Its usually flexitime too which is brilliant so you can work early or late as it suits you. You need to watch their website like a hawk though. Just an idea anyway !

At 33, you are hardly over the hill. You can do just about anything you want if you put your mind to it, but you need some ambition and drive. You should get a college bursary to help with finances and you can work part time. My friend put herself through 4 years of university at 35 (single mum with 2 kids). It's do-able if you put your mind to it.
