Painful Eyelid

My left eyelid has been abit painful recently, but not in one place like a stye, it's most of the way along. Every day at the base of my eyelashes there's hard sleepy dust skanky stuff, which I try and get out, but that just makes my eyelid sore from poking it about. If I do ever get a stye, it is usually on this eye too. Does anyone know why this may be happening? and why just one eye?

Thanks for the answers, and thanks for the link sense4all. I'm really not sure what it is, don't think it's conjunctivitis - if it persists I'll go and see the doctor.
