There is a school of thought that dogs, and indeed other animals, are sensitive to psychic vibrations, and they often appear to be staring at objects that only they can see. This is more likely to be an anthropomorphicresponse by people looking for an explanation.

I think animals see ghosts. My cats sometimes chase things and stare at the walls meowing for no reason at all!!

I think they do. My dog often stares or barks into thin air.
