When released by the police pending a report to the prosecution service, how long do you have to wait until you know if you are going to be charged? Also, if not charged within that time period, can you consider your self free?

It depends on what the prosection need to decide if to charge or not, They may need to get hold of wittness statements, CCTV etc.. I would doubt they have a time period to charge in though... Im not in Law though so would aslo be interested if im wrong
Well..you have been set free already!!..the point is the will you be charged or not. stautes exit in different countries requiring different durations between acusation and charge and charge and court appearances. If you mean 'unable to be prosecuted' you have to check locally. Best way is to ask the Police and then go somewhere else to look for the truth; Do not fear until you are charged and even then the system has safegurds in civilised countries and even countries purporting legal civilising like the USA where a guy can do 25 years for stealing a pizza as his third "three strikes and you are "OUT" have some...
cheers
