An asylum seeker has been sentenced to 11 years for keeping a woman prisoner and raping her five times. If this man is a genuine asylum seeker who sought refuge here because he feared for his life in his own country, would deportation be a more effective sentence than a term in prison?

No, there is no certainty that the animal would be killed if he was deported. It's just as likely that given his propensity to sneakiness he would easily evade the authorities in his homeland and perhaps go and live elsewhere in Africa. That continent doesn't exactly have a cutting edge infrastructure. It would be like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
I would be 90 per cent confident that the rapist would not be killed - at least not for political affiliation. Either way though, who really cares. Whether he survives for five minutes or fifty years in his homeland, he'll have learned one hell of a lesson.
