Potatoes - Slow Cooker
3 Answers
Hi Guys,
Is it possible to cook a potato dauphinois in a slow cooker? I think that is what the layered potatoe dish is called (layers of thin slices of potato with milk, butter seasoning and baked for hours in the overn until crispy on the top). Any advice gratefully received - oh and can you cook duck/pork in a slow cooker too per chance?
Thanks

For a start, there's a greater risk of the cream splitting, and also you wouldn't get the crisp, browned layer on top. Using sliced, par-boiled potatoes layered in an oven dish is should only really take 30 mins at most in a hot oven.
Pork, however, is ideally suited to slow-cooking! As it has a tendency to dry out, a slow-cooker is the perfect way to cook it, especially with the cheaper cuts.

Of course you can
Potato onion and garlic gratin is similar I suppose .
In my slow cooker book it says ..
Butter the pot .then layer onions ,garlic and ,thinly sliced potato, season the layers with salt pepper and thyme .pour over just enough stock to cover ..cook on high 4-5 hours.
When it's cooked shove a load of Gruyere cheese on top and brown it off under the grill,
You can cook any meat in a slow cooker .Just shove it in and let it sozzle all day. No liquid for duck or pork there is plenty of fat in it .You can put a little stock in the pot if want to ..then you can use that for gravy .
