I'm a 'jack of all trades' worked in factories, on building sites, in shops- you name- it I have likely done it! Often wondered, never reached a conclusion. You have enlightened me. As an aside, I just prefer the feel of the 'square' pencil when marking wood etc. A round pencil just don't feel right. Thanks again.
Just an afterthought- when I did technical drawing, we were shown how to sharpen our pencils with a 'chisel' edge as opposed to a point. The reason was it was more accurate when drawing against a template and tended to stay 'sharp' longer. Could this be why the pencils are 'square'? You can't sharpen them in a traditional sharpener- you have to use a chisel or knife. Perhaps it's a bit of each?
