msconfig

my computer is very slow. on msconfig start up tab only a few items ticked but a lot of programms are running if you check the services tab. How will I know what should be running and is there a website address to tell me.

Select second tab and look at the resource useage. Many programs are resource hungry, but the main offenders are virus checkers (particularly Norton and McAfee) and also Nero.A program such as Advanced Uninstaller or Mindsoft utilities will help. They both have start up managers and you can turn on or turn off offending programs.

Alternatively you can get the file name (should be displayed on MSconfig) and type that into Google.
This should bring up loads of website which give you advice on how safe a program is, if Windows needs it to run on Startup etc.
