Each match knocks out one player. 526 players have to be knocked out to get a winner. The answer is therefore 526 matches.

A quick calculation is 526 matches . . i.e. 15 preliminary matches to reduce numbers to 512 men then 256+128+64+32+16+8+4+2+1 = 526.
