critical illness and giving notice

I need to hand in my notice because my partner has been diagnosed with cancer. I should give four weeks notice but I can not do all the shifts on my rota due to hospital appointments and I can not work quite the whole four weeks. Is this a huge problem? my employers are very nice, but they are not running a charity...

Talk to them - explain. To be honest, if they can't accomodate you, then are they worth considering?

The majority of employers will be more than willing to give you compassionate leave in these circumstances and allow you to take off the days you can't work, as long as you explain, they will probably be fine.

Go to your doctor and ask him to sign you off right here and now.

Do it tomorrow - because if you carry on like this you're bound to get stressed out and that will drain your strength.

If your doc is a half decent understanding person, he can sign you off for four weeks with stress, covering your notice and you'll have nothing to worry about.

You're facing a difficult time ahead, so put yourself first, because you're going to have to be extra strong for you and your partner.
