Waving to people from a boat
18 Answers
I was on a very enjoyable boat trip down the Danube over the weekend and found complete strangers waving at me from the shore and also from other boats and I waved back. It occurred to me that people never wave at each other from other forms of transport like cars or trains, coaches or bikes so why just boats?

I remember hiring a boat for the first time on a long weekend and cruising down the Thames, I was so pleased to see one of those long canoe type boats with loads of guys in (you know, the boat race things!!) all waving at us, we politely waved back.
After they passed we saw the size of our wake just before it sank them!! oooops!!
Well they give you a speed limit to drive down the Thames but there ain't no speedo in the boat!!!

The reason i don't wave the majority of the time is because the majority that tend to wave at us are teenagers, i don't want to stereotype all of these, but teenagers throw allsorts of things at trains, its the wave to the driver routine, and when you wave back ...........................

I also drive trains, but I guess not the same type that laurence drives. In fact I drive steam engines on a heritage railway and almost everyone waves at me. Our line runs along side a river for several miles, at this time of the year it is very busy with pleasure craft, I often give them a friendly whistle and their "drivers" always wave back. So here we have people on trains and boats greeting each other!
