I've received a vegetable as part of my weekly organic delivery, and I've never seen it before in my life! I think it's part of the cabbage family but can't find it on the internet. The cabbage section is very dense and pale green and about the size of a large mango, which has 4 stems growing out of it which are dark green and leafy at the ends. Any ideas?
If it's the size of a tennis ball, has green stalks coming out of the bulb and looks like a sputnik, it's kohl rabi and it's delicious lightly cooked and served with butter. If the main bulb area has thick layers rather like an onion which can be peeled off individually, and it has a slight aniseed taste it will be fennel. This can be steamed or braised, or even sliced up raw in salads, as can the kohl rabi.
My apologies Champagne! however you said in your original post it was the size of a mango, had 4 (Specifically 4) dark green stems and leafy at the ends. That describes Fennel perfectly.
