How do I take cuttings from a Japanese Maple tree?

they are very very difficult to get cuttings to take root, therefore I would recomend trying seed every time!

Ps remove the wings and sow fresh in late autumn 2" pots with John innes #3 compost or ericacious compost.
i have had a lot of success by just cutting off the new shoots growing, about 3 inches, putting them in root powder and then just stick them in a pot. They look like they are dying and sometimes you just have a stick but the next year they grow. Obviously some die, so make sure you take a few extra cuttings.
