Will Windows 98 second edition automtically recognise a data bar/pen drive ?
I need to copy some pics from my fathers computer.

Theoretically, yes, but W98 is no longer supported, so if there is a cdrw drive available use that, or remove the hard drive and connect it up to your PC and copy the pictures that way
My conel pen came with a mini CD for 98 and 2000.

It works great on my Partner's computer, only get a small sign saying that a USB2.0 device has been plugged into a USB 1.1 port.

I am confident the manufacturer of your device will have a driver on their website if 98SE doesn't have one.
You will need the software I expect!!
98 doesn't natively support external drives of any type the manufacturer of the drive is responsible for producing drivers.

It's something to check before you buy an external drive of any type ... not all drives have 98 support

If you use a router to access the internet and have network cards fitted to both machines ... just share a folder and copy them that way
if not a crossover cable is cheap ...
