My cousin has a two year old Clio and has recently got a letter on the same problem.
I don't have one but I remember it being on Watchdog a while ago. Alot of people had problems with faulty bonnet catches and wrote in about it. One woman even had her bonnet fly up and smash the windscreen while driving. I would have got rid of it a long time ago.
the older clios have a platic safetey catch which was failing hence the bonnet coming dislodged. the newer clios have a metal catch so they will probably just fit a metal catch.
Oh Boy, is Nicky Campbell on Watchdog going to gloat now!
If you have a clio read all about it here.........

Put Clio bonnet catches in the search box.
there is an ongoing battle over this problem it is life threatening if it happens to you, can i suggest you go on parkers online . on there are forums with this topic a special section all its own!
One of my team recently had hers fail, and it was almost catastrophic. Car sold the day after repair. This is not something to delay.
It may be worth noting that if anyone is learning and intending to take their driving test in one of these affected vehicles, their test will not be conducted unless a certificate can be produced from a Renault dealer saying the fault has been rectified.
My renault bonnet came up last week and smashed my windscreen! Got a terrible fright! luckily I wasnt injured, Renault have had 450 plus customers complaining of the same thing happening. There is a major design fault here! but renault are saying there is no problem!
i have a 18 month old clio, and i received a letter saying that there is no problem! crazy!
Here is the last of 4 reports you can find on the BBC Watchdog website

my son had a letter a couple of weeks ago the only problem was that the nearest garage which check them free was over 2 hours drive away.
gard they changed the catch on the newer models from plastic to metal . yours is prob the metal one.
19 June 07 - my Clio bonnet catch failed - the bonnet smashed into my windscreen hit the arial mount and sent my interior light panel into the car, the lens cover hit me in the face. Thankfully I managed to stop on the dual carraigeway without hitting anything or anything hitting me. Terrible experience. The recall campaign hasn't got around to me yet apparently so I don't have letter, however Renault say they have had testing carried out by VOSA and there isn't a defect!! Surely the best test is in the driving. Does someone have to be 'murdered' before Renault do the responsible thing. I have emailed Watchdog and Renault - what now? Is anyone interested in launching a campaign?
