without having to use those cheap looking joining strips. I saw a jig in Screwfix but how do you use it?

If I am thinking of the same sort of jig it is used in conjunction with a router. the router would need to have at least a half inch collet. A special cutter is required depending upon the depth of the worktop.Holes are also created on the underneath to take special fixings like nut and bolt to keep the join together. Sometimes a kitchen fitter/joiner will create the join for you at a price. Hope this of help.
Unless you have a good quality router already, it won't be worth buying the Screwfix jig to attempt this. You'd be better off phoning around to try and find a kitchen fitter with a couple of hours spare to come and do this for you. Obviously don't fix down the worktops until the job is done.

Yeah true enough of those comments.

I never realised i could just get someone to do the worktop alone, but thats food for thought.

It would likely to be the birch worktop you see in IKEA just the solid wood one, however i'm unsure of its durability

thanks again
check out local hire shops as some will hire you the jig and router with the right bits. Far cheaper than buying all the gear your self, just to use it once.
I wouldn't recommend doing the butt&scribe joints yourself, it's not a DIJ job. I fit kitchens for a living and to set up with the proper tools, cutters cramps & jigs will cost about 300 minimum for the proper gear. that is unless you borrow or hire, but even then it would take quite a bit of practice intil you can get the perfect joint. I am often asked to cut the worktops for people who have fitted there own units, and normaly charge about 25 per joint including bolts & adhesives, but i also cut out for the sink & hob at the same time as it is much easier to do this before fitting the worktops down.
