General Election

When a General Election is called and Parliament is dissolved, is there a name for the 'limbo' period. What happens in the event of a National crisis - does power revert back to the current/previous government?

This limbo period is sometimes referred to as an 'interregnum' - literal meaning �between reigns�.

Although there cease to be any Members of Parliament, and former Members may not enter or use the facilities of the House during the election campaign, the Government continues in office and Ministers continue to be in charge of Departments which contain the apolitical Civil Service, employees of the Crown not Parliament.

What happens in the event of a national crisis? you ask.

The same thing as when there is a Goverment, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ! !

A national crisis or other emergency would be handled by the Privy Council.

I would suppose like during the Second World War,party politics will be thrown out and the monarch would appoint a Prime Minister (if anything happens now,more than likely it would be Gordon Brown) and a National or Coalition government would be formed.
