Ants!

For some strange reason, a firned and myself had a conversation about ants this afternoon which left us with two questions:

1) How can you tell the difference between the queen ant and the others (other than it being bigger....how much bigger)?

2) How does destroying the queen ant rid you of the other ants in the nest (my friend said she was told this works but doesnt know how)?
