The HP is slightly heavier, but the HP says it is a "bright" screen which I am not sure if the Toshiba has.
If the HP is exclusively for Comet then you have no way of knowing how much it is really worth as they can set any price they like as you have nothing to compare it with.
The Toshiba is sold at other places, and is still on sale at 499 at some, so your KNOW it is a 499 laptop that you can get for 399.
Also I think the Toshiba looks better. The HP is a rather dull all over grey/silver whereas the Toshiba is a sexy black and silver.
(I am not saying you should buy on just looks but with all else being equal you have to look for things like that)
If I had the choice I would go for the Toshiba.

not sure on the Toshiba think its an obsolete model thats why its on offer.Sister in law had the Equium 100-47 and had lots of problems with the cd writer on it.This could have been solved on this model.Looked on Toshiba site cant find this one only L40-10U,Id say its a discontinued model and so its cheaper.Laptops direct are selling off Acer Aspire 5633WLMI FROM 699 NOW 449 quite good specs and would outperform both your choices.
Well the Acer mentioned above has a slower processor than both the HP and Toshiba you asked about.
You can check CPU performance here.

The Acer also has an 80Gb HD whereas the Toshiba and HP both have 120Gb.
It seems to me there are loads of laptops around the 399 mark and you could spend days comparing one with the other.
Both the Toshiba and HP you ask about are good deals for around 400.

One other thing.
I went into Staples today (not sure if there is one near you) and they have a few laptops deals going.
They had a HP G5056 (similar to the HP you are asking about) for 399.
T2080 CPU, 120Gb hard drive, 15.4" screen, 1Gb ram, and Vista Home Premium.
I must say it looks nicer than it does in photo, a sort of brushed silver.
They also had a HP DV6259 (or maybe 6529 , the label gave both numbers) with a HP F380 printer for 439.
This has an AMD CPU as opposed to an Intel but they can be just as good as Intel.
They also had a Fujitsu Li1718 at 399 with similar specs to the Toshiba and HP.
Let us know if you ever make a final decision ;-)
