Hi AB's. I normally use Kazaa to download all my music ect. but i recently got load of viruses and crap from it so i got win MX which is very slow n not a lot of files are avaliable. Does anyone know any other software packages that don't have viruses or spyware and have a wide choice of files.

Try Ares? From download.com. I thought it was pretty good. Don't think it has anything dodgy in it. Obviously bittorrent is the way to go, but not really good for music. Maybe full albums, but not individual songs.

Kazaa comes with a virus, you get it with the program. a while ago i used grokster, its what windows 95 is to XP, less stylish.
Grokster was good to me, untill i stopped doing it illegaly. it had all the stuff that kazza had and all the stuff on afew other download sites. not sure if its around anymore though but when i had it it was dam fast and virus free. Worth a try

I have been using LimeWire for about a year, and never had any problems with Virus or Spyware. Truly is an excellent program! Its alot easier to use than WinMX too.

I also use Limewire and am delighted - keep clear of Bearshare it is also dodgy.

You can never totally avoid viruses when downloading from the web. You just have to be careful, that's all. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan everything you download before you run it. If you have WinXP, create a restore point before opening any executable or zip files you download. It takes two minutes, but it will save you hours if you do get a virus - simply restore your PC back.

Also for spyware, run BOTH Ad-Aware (www.lavasoft.com) and Spybot (www.safer-networking.org) weekly - these will help keep your PC free of spyware / malware / adware.

Avoid Grokster, it will download loads of malware onto your computer.

It is regularly used to infect computers with malware to test the effectiveness of Spyware removal tools.

I use a program called Shareaza, which is an open-source version of kazaa, but can also deal with .torrent files as well as other p2p protocols.

It has no spyware included, but can be a bit of a resource hog when downloading.

hope this helps. But you still need to check all your downloads for viruses and nasties. Just because the program is free of them, doesn't make you immune...
