Hi, I have a problem. Whenever I drink Alcohol, even just one mouthful, my face goes red, it's not that I'm drunk, how could I be with so little alcohol, and when I say I go red, I mean REALLY red, and it doesn't stop until about 20-30 mins later. Does anyone have this problem and how do I go about reducing or slowing down this redness?
A friend of mine has a similar problem. His is an allergy to wheat (i Think) and it is beer that makes him very red. Unfortunately it means he can't drink beer (but wine is fine)
I too am not sure why it happens my mother, wife and her father all have the problem. i suppose it could be a allergy. i guess you could never be a closet drinker then...lol
Lots of Asian people or people of Asian descent show this ....their faces go bright red even after only a couple of sips...and it can be embarassing if the people around u dont know it is a biological thing...I once heard that it was an inability of the body to process something in the alcohol...
Really? Because I'm Chinese, and I do get a little embarrased walking around with a bright red face :-/
Thanks for sharing everyone, especially bluedolphin, I thought was just me.
This happens to my Mum and she is Chinese (I am half). She finds that any spirits or wine will do it but OK on beer and cider. I am horribly allergic to all booze - was never very tolerant of the stuff but my tolerance dropped rapidly about 4 years ago (when I was 24) from being able to drink about 4-6 pints before being ill to now when I had to go to hospital following a half-pint of beer and the vomiting of blood. As faras I know the only resolution is to lay off the booze entirely of see which drinks affect you and avoid them.
In about 50% of sinoasians they have an inactive Aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme involved in the metabolism of alcohol. Normally Ethanol is converted to acetaldehyde and then on to acetates. But where this enzyme is inactive acetaldehydes rapidly build up which cause the flushing and nausea etc.
I don't drink beer but do drink alcohol my face also goes blood red so you not on your own. Not sure what the solution is but mine is nothing to do with wheat
