On an 1890s NW London OS map with only a limited 'key', there are many unexplained areas, best described as irregular ovoids. Each looks like a puddle, each has an irregular wiggly line protrubing in no particular direction. Each covers varying areas from a few to many square metre. They appear in fields, at the sides of fields, and at the sides of some roads. What do they represent? Help please.

If you are still searching for an answer, then the Paper Mapping team at Ordnance Survey will help. Inintially they were stumped but suggest that if you fax an example of the 'ovoids' to them, with an explanation of your query, they will try to help you out. Their fax number is 023 8079 2615. Their website is at: http://www.ordsvy.gov.uk/
