I never really liked "proper" punk - I suppose The Clash were the nearest I got. I think I was just a bit too young to appreciate what punk trying to do. I did have quite an affinity for the more melodic artists on the fringes of punk - The Boomtown Rats, Elvis Costello, Squeeze etc - who were only really ever associated with punk firstly because of the time they were around, and secondly because they sang songs laced with anger (maybe not Squeeze) or about real urban/suburban life. Hardly punk hardcore though, any of them.
